Johnny Hallyday (born 15 June 1943, Paris, France - died 5 December 2017, Marnes-la-Coquette, France) was a French singer, songwriter, performer and actor.
As of November 2011, Johnny Hallyday had sold more than 100 million records, and earned 40 gold records, 22 platinum records, 3 diamond records and 8 Victoires de la Musique (the French equivalent of the Grammy). 28 million spectators have attended his concerts over more than 100 tours in France and Europe. However, like most French singers and musicians, his international career never really took off. Despite some tours abroad in the 1960s and 1970s, and a concert in Las Vegas in 1996, Hallyday is virtually unknown to the public outside the French speaking world.
Hallyday recorded some 1000 songDukas's opera Ariane et Barbe-bleue, based on Maeterlinck's symbolist version of the classic tale, sees free spirit Ariane become the sixth wife of the infamous Barbe-bleue, who gives his new bride seven keys to seven doors, but prohibits the use of the last. Ariane discovers an array of glittering jewels behind the first six doors, but a terrifying reality awaits her as she unlocks the seventh.
JosÈ van Dam is cast as the villainous Barbe-bleue, while taking on the immensely demanding role of Ariane - who does not leave the stage throughout the entire opera - is American soprano Jeanne-MichËle Charbonnet.
"Also of paramount importance for a successful performance is the orchestral part. And also in this case, the current production featured the right person in the right place, by entrusting the orchestra of the Liceu, which had never played this opera, to conductor StÈphane DenËve." (The Opera Critic)
"Charbonnet copes well with the extreme demands of Ariane, while Patricia Bardon is excellent as the nurse and it is wonderful to have Jose van Dam for Barbe-Bleu's handful of lines. Most of all, StÈphane DenËve's pacing and handling of orchestral texture are spot-on. One to hear with the screen off.
